Tin was first discovered in 1880, and for many years the Herberton Mineral Field was the richest tin producing area in Australia. A thriving township was established and at one time there were 20 hotels in the town, together wtih the usual businesses assoicated with mining towns. The population then fluctuated with the rise and decline of the mining activities. Visitors and residents are encouraged to visit the new Herberton Mining and Information Centre to learn more about the town's interesting past. From here, you can enjoy one of the heritage themed walks around the town and surrounding countryside. There are a number of places to enjoy Herberton's hospitality including a caravan park, bed & breakfasts, hotels and the Herberton Heritage Cottage.
